Parts
Reduction to physicality. What am I biologically? As a woman of transexual experience, I am often reduced to just my parts. My biology. Those who would prefer to keep up the sacred walls separating sex and gender, would prefer to think of me as “biologically” male. I struggle to understand what part of me is male, and I don’t think I am, but who am I to speak up in the face of endless culture war?
This separation is enough to restrict my access to womanhood in our society. This separation occurs regardless of the voyeur’s political alignment, infecting the mind of even the most “woke” cis ally.
Believe me, dear reader, when I speak of voyeurs, I am talking about you. You are observing and making judgements, sorting people into their biological boxes, even though biology is far less straight forward than you would like it to be.
Parts is an exploration of my biology. Am I more than a collection of parts? Are these parts female? Where does society sort me, and does that align with my “biological truth”?
Parts is a series of self portraits. This project is ongoing and has been shot off and on since 2021.
